Breathe Out: Strategies for Calming Your Autonomic Nervous System

Learn about the autonomic nervous system (which controls our “fight and flight” response to stress), and explore different strategies to help regulate your autonomic nervous system, and decrease the effects that chronic stress has on your body.

Why this workshop?

Watch this previously recorded workshop to learn about the autonomic nervous system (which controls our “fight and flight” response to stress), and explore different strategies to help regulate your autonomic nervous system, and decrease the effects that chronic stress has on your body.

"Fight and flight." "Rest and digest." These terms are often used to describe the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The ANS is commonly known as the part of the nervous system you cannot control. Some examples of bodily functions controlled by the ANS include your heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, and temperature. People who experience a lot of chronic stress, including people with medical conditions and their caregivers, often feel the ill effects of being in "fight and flight" for too long, with a fast heart rate, poor digestion, increased blood pressure, and more.

While "fight and flight" or "rest and digest" are oversimplified definitions of a very complex part of our nervous systems, it turns out that the ANS is not as far out of our control as was once thought. We can implement several techniques and activities to help regulate our autonomic nervous systems and feel better in our bodies. Learn more about the ANS, and techniques to help yourself feel calmer and more in control.

Amy is as passionate about connecting with fellow caregiving moms as she is using her professional knowledge to help people with pain, rare diseases, and other neurologic conditions. She loves reading, meditating, and singing loudly in the car, and is extremely excited to share her love of the autonomic nervous system and breathing techniques with you all in this workshop!
